Abstract
Volatilesaresmall(<300 Da),smellymoleculesemittedbyallorganisms.Theyhaveverydiverse rolesfortheproducingorganism(e.g.,asinfochemicalsorantimicrobialcompounds)andfulfill importantecosystemfunctions.Whiletheimportanceofplantvolatileshasbeenrecognizedfor more than30years,researchonmicrobialvolatilesattractedattentiononlyinthelastdecades. Thisspecialissuefocusesonseveralnewfindingsandrecentdevelopmentsinthefieldofmicrobial (fungalandbacterial)volatiles,theirbiologicalfunctionsandchemicalidentification,whichare highlightedinthiseditorial.
