A clone of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) II7N-satellite RNA was introduced into tomato plants (Lycopersicon esculentum cv. Pink Forcer) by Agrobacterium tumefaciens Ti plasmid mediated transformation. From PCR and Northern blot analyses, it was confirmed that the cDNA of satellite RNA was integrated into the plant genome and stably expressed in the transgenic tomato plants. Transgenic plants producing CMV satellite RNA were challenged with CMV-K or CMV-Y. In the case of CMV-Y inoculated transgenic plants, there was almost no development of disease symptoms, and production of viral RNAs was greatly reduced when compared with the CMV-Y inoculated nontransformed control plants. On the other hand, development of disease symptoms was barely attenuated and only sUght reduction of viral RNAs was observed in the case of CMV-K inoculated transgenic plants when compared with the CMV-K inoculated nontransformed plants.-
