dc.description.abstractThis study was conducted to know whether lactoferrin might be effective for preventing rotavirus infection in the MA-104 cells or not. The results were as follows. 1. Rotavirus was positively detected in 22 out of 81 infant diarrhea patients living in Seoul city and Kyongki province. 2. The eletropherotype pattem of dsRNA for all the 22 viruses was shown to be 4: 2: 3: 2 type like traditional group A and the imigration pattern of dsRNA, long type like Wa(G1), Ku(G1), Yo(G3) and Hosokawa(G4). 3. Titers of rotavirus, K-21 and S2 were 1 × 10^(7) PFU/ml and 7 × 10^(6) PFU/ml, respectively. 4. The serotype of all the 20 viruses was shown to be group A, subgroup Ⅱ, G1, and P1A by ELISA and PCR analyses. 5. The partial nucleotide sequence of VP7 of K-21 was completely similar to that of Wa and 98% homology with that of KU. However, VP4 of K-21 showed 96.74% homology with that of Wa and 90.88% with that of KU in nucleotide sequence. 6. Lactoferrin amounts needed for 99% inhibition of each HRV infection in the MA 104 cells were as fellows ; 25.5 μM of BWLF in HRV K-21, 103.8 μM of BHLF in HRV K-21, 51.9 μM of BWLF in HRV S2, 217.5 μM of BHLF in HRV S2, 217.5 μM of HWLF in HRV K-21 and 103.8 μM of HWLF in HRV S2. When the bovine lactoferrin hydrolyzed by pepsin was added upon, the HRV inhibition rate was less effective than whole lactoferrin. These results suggest that HRV infection in the MA 104 cells may be prevented by the treatment of lactoferrin and the effectiveness may be slightly different depending on the rotavirus type and the nature of lactoferrin.-
